 Best Places To...Hear Live Music
  1. Milestones
It just doesn't get any better than Milestones if you want to hear good live music in Rochester for under $10-$15. Milestones is both a tour stop for smaller market national recording artists as well as a favorite regular spot for many local acts. Anything from celtic folk rock (Carbon Leaf, Clumsy Lovers) to good old fashioned jam bands (Seeking Homer) to your average party cover-band (Me & The Boyz) is likely to be featured on any given night, so be sure to check their website to see what's going on this month at Milestones. One important side note: Milestones has an outdoor patio where smoking is allowed.

  2. Water Street Music Hall
Water Street Music Hall gets the number 2 mention in our "Best Places To Hear Live Music", but depending on what kind of band/artist you want to see, this place could easily be a #1 pick without thinking twice. Water Street is a larger venue, and as such is able to host more nationally known acts and accomodate the larger crowds that follow. Recently Water Street has heldbeen host to acts such as Government Mule, and the Tea Party. This month you can see bands such as MxPx, KMFDM, The Derek Trucks Band, Alkaline Trio, and many others. The bar area at Water Street is pretty big, there are places to sit down if you choose, and you are close to other popular local clubs being only a block away from the St Paul St. Quarter.

  3. Bug Jar
Bug Jar has live music almost every night, so you're not often going to hear of any national acts playing there, but that's exactly how Bug Jar wants things to be. You will be treated to talented local and regional bands in one a bar with one of the best atmospheres in the area. The cover is almost always around $5-$7 (and usually are different for over/under, but 18+ are welcome) and you'll usually get to hear 3-5 bands playing anything from electronic/house music to hard rock to jazz. If you are looking for a drink, some live music, and a $5 cover...we highly recommend Bug Jar. Check their website for this month's schedule.

 Best Places To...Try New Beers
  1. MacGregors Grill and Tap Room - Henrietta
1.
MacGregors Grill and Tap Room - Gregory St
MacGregors in Henrietta has over 100 bars on tap (there are close to 130 taps there in total!) and there are always 3 beers on the specials list ($2.25 pints, $5 pitchers). For that price, you'd expect to get the same old domestics available for $5-$6 per pitcher at any of a number of other local bars. At MacGregors, you look at the list of specials and say to yourself "I can't believe I can get a pint of that for $2.25". Recent beers on the list include Yuengling Lager, Guiness, and Ithaca Nut Brown. If you are looking for a new beer to try, we could not in good conscience recommend anywhere but MacGregors. Just pick something off the specials list, and have fun!

  2. The Old Toad
The Old Toad is an authentic English Pub with beers you'll rarely see in a bar on this side of the Atlantic. The Old Toad is also one of only a handful of bars nationally that serves handpumped real ales. That is, they are "served at a fermentation temperature of 55 degrees (cool, not cold, but definitely not warm) - the temperature that gives the best flavor and has no carbonation other than that created by the natural fermentation in the barrel." It sounds strange to those of us used to drinking ice cold beer, but is a surprisingly good way to have these beers. We highly recommend taking part in the Sheffield's frequent-buyer program. for every 5 Sheffields (one of their Real Ales) pints you purchase at The Old Toad, you get one free. Be sure to go on a Monday night at 9:30 if football isn't your thing for the most popular Quiz Night in Rochester (get there early! we recommend 9:00 if you want a table). The Old Toad has a great selection of beers you won't find on tap at many other bars, and they serve them in the traditional English style you won't find at any other bar in the region.
